Confidential letter No.9 of the 18th June, 1901, should be read. This having been done, questions were asked by His Excellency the Governor, the Colonial Secretary, and the Hon. Acting Attorney General, and Inspector Mills produced receipts for some of the money which he had refunded to subscribers on receiving notice that his expenses in the case would be defrayed by the Government. As no witnesses had been summoned, it was advised that further consideration of the case should be postponed till Thursday the 11th instant, at 11 a.m., and that a number of witnesses, who were named, should be requested to be in attendance.

CASE OF SANITARY INSPECTOR MILLS.
Council resumed consideration of the case of Mr. J. Mills, Inspector of Nuisances under the Sanitary Board, who was accused of having procured certain money contributions from certain Chinese persons towards the expenses of his defence in the recent case of manslaughter. In addition to the accused, there were present two witnesses; namely (1) Li Shan Fan of the Li Hing Shop, 153, Queen's Road Central, from whom certain money had been procured or borrowed by Mr. Mills, and (2) Pun Yun Fong, who was employed in the shop of the witness above mentioned. Mr. J. Dyer Ball acted as Interpreter. After the witnesses had made the customary declaration, they were separately examined by the Hon. Acting Attorney General, and evidence was given to the effect that certain money was handed by Li Shun Fan, to ...
